I brought Square Payroll into the Square Staff team member list, unifying two disconnected employee management systems into one experience.

Square Staff and Square Payroll each maintained their own team member list. Employers had to add employees twice, entering overlapping information across two disconnected systems. The redundancy created data discrepancies and added unnecessary friction to one of the core jobs payroll is hired to do.

I led the Payroll experience strategy and design, partnering closely with the Square Staff team and a Foundation Designer responsible for the underlying team management platform. Together, we consolidated the two lists through a phased approach. First, we unified the entry point by deprecating the standalone payroll list and routing employers through the Square Staff team member list. Then I redesigned payroll onboarding from a single dense form into a guided step-by-step flow, collecting information incrementally and aligning the experience with how employers actually onboard new hires. The result was a faster, more reliable setup experience that eliminated duplicate data entry and significantly reduced team member setup errors.
