I led the redesign of Square Payroll to support larger, more complex businesses.
As businesses grew, many began to outgrow Square Payroll and look elsewhere for solutions that could better support their evolving needs. Growing employers needed greater flexibility, stronger onboarding guidance, and more confidence in the reliability of payroll operations. To retain growing sellers and support upmarket expansion, Square needed a payroll experience built around the realities of larger and more complex businesses.
As lead designer, I partnered closely with sellers to understand how they managed payroll and what they needed to succeed. Together with cross-functional partners, we developed a north star vision grounded in the core jobs businesses hire payroll to do: pay employees on time, stay compliant, and offer competitive benefits. The result was a modernized payroll experience that addressed the needs of growing businesses while establishing a clear foundation for how Square Payroll could evolve over time.
